Open Atrium, Beyond the Intranet
Open Atrium is designed to be a powerful Drupal-based Intranet solution, but the underlying technology allows to do much more: creating a public portal with a totally different graphic design and complementing it with a private Intranet; creating other group presets than the default "public" and "private" group; customizing the profile fields in a clean and modular way, and several other possibilities.
Here is the Nuvole presentation from the Drupal Dev Days in Brussels (Slideshare embed below, PDF attached to this post).

Antonio spent a few years advocating Drupal in large student organizations like Erasmus Student Network, where he was responsible for the ESN Satellite project, a Drupal website template now used by more than 300 ESN sections all over Europe. After moving to Brussels he founded Youth Agora, a non-profit organization working on Drupal projects in the field of international youth information.
In 2008, due to the increasing demand for Drupal projects, he co-founded Nuvole, a Drupal company based in Brussels and Italy and specialized in working with international NGOs. Nuvole, due to its geographically distributed team, is a pioneer in the field of 100% code driven development.
Antonio shares his experience on the company's blog and by regularly presenting in national and international events, like Drupal VolCon 2010, Drupal Belgium Developer Sessions, DrupalCon Copenhagen 2010 and DrupalCamp Torino 2010.

How is the documents section
How is the documents section in one of the screenshots implemented? I think this is a missing feature of the default installation. Notebook with attachments is okay for the most simple stuff, but a proper interface for file management is required in every setup.
It's custom development
You are right; the Document Feature is a custom development and is described at http://nuvole.org/case/european-youth-forum-intranet ; it requires a few modifications to become suitable for public distribution, but we plan to release it shortly.
Mmm nice case study, how
Mmm nice case study, how about the simplenews newsletter feature, that's some rather hot hotsauce...that could be habanerno...
That feature set looks great!
That feature set looks great! It would be awesome if you could release that.
Would be interested in it as
Would be interested in it as well. Can you let us know when / where its available?
No set deadlines
We have no set deadlines for it at the moment. As for the announcement, when we release it we will surely post an announcement on the Nuvole blog, just keep following!
is this project still live?
is this project still live? all the multisite features are they using one database or can this be spread across many databases?
Re: is this project still live?
The project is live, and private. Minisites are groups and share the same database.
Documents Feature available now
Is this feature already available or is there any work left to get it released?
It would be great to have this feature working for Open Atrium!
Re: Documents Feature available now
The Documents Feature was released in May 2011 with the name "Atrium Folders" and it was introduced in a dedicated post on this same blog.
